Can anyone suggest some good rockhounding sites within a couple of hours of Tucson? I'll be coming in for the show.

Southern Arizona Fossils never publishes specific locations, we collect very little material, and as a result, we do not have to worry about land status (of course we always obey no trespassing signs). I have listed a couple of web sites that have published rockhounding sites. Some good reference books are: Roadside Geology of Arizona by Halka Chronic, and Rockhounding Arizona, both available at the Tucson Public Library. The Southern Arizona Guidebook III available at the Arizona Geological Society down town is another good reference. azwww.az.blm.gov/rockhounding/locations.htmwww.psiaz.com/Schur/azpaleo/localiti.htmlwww.psiaz.com/Schur/azpaleo/fossadv.htmlHope that helps. Here is a link to an aritcle on the Helvetia minning district. It's an interesting place. Most of the Limestone in the area has been baked into marble. We have found a few pieces of Malachite and Quartz.. www.tucsonweekly.com/tw/07-25-96/outthere.htm
